DIY Tutorial: Deadpool Booksleeve

I was really excited for the premiere of Deadpool movie last week. To be honest, I didn’t care that much about Deadpool till the first teaser of the movie. I’m impressed by how cool the costume is and that’s why I’m going to show you how to make Deadpool book sleeve.

Okay, without further ado here’s the list of tools and materials you’ll need for this project:

  • Red Vinyl or any fabric of your choice (at least 4 times wider than your book cover)
  • Black Vinyl or any fabric of your choice (at least 15x15cm)
  • White scrap fabric
  • Red and Black threads
  • Needle
  • Ruler
  • Paper Clip Binder
  • Cutter
  • Pencil or Chalk
  • Scissors
  • Ruber Cement
  • Sewing Machine (optional)

First thing first is to measure the width and height of your notebook. Add about 1 or 2 centimeters on the height. Take the measurement for the mask template. I made my template on my computer by looking at images as a reference. Go ahead if you want to make one yourself, but if you want to use mine, you can download it here. Note that the template and this tutorial are only for personal use and not to be sold in any manners.

After you done making pattern trace it onto the fabric of your choice. I know that the real costume using spandex as the main material, but I want to make my book cover to be waterproof and easier to clean so I choose vinyl for both eye and the red/suit part. I got this vinyl from a local fabric store, but if it’s hard for you to find, you can always find it online.

Here are some diagrams for you to follow when tracing the pattern. Feel free to adjust the size of the pattern to fit your book.

Use this guide as you tracing the pattern.

Once you’ve done tracing, cut the pattern along the tracing mark using cutter or scissor, I recommend using rotary cutter if you got one. After the patterns are cut, draw a line 1 cm from the edge on the wrong side, this line will act as a guide when you sew and glue it later on. Do it to the entire pattern.

Now, trace and cut the black vinyl for the eye part. I use x-acto knife or art knife to make the eye hole. Then cut a scrap of a thick white fabric for the eye. Glue it together using rubber cement. Just spread the rubber cement thinly and evenly on both surface (the white fabric and the black vinyl), wait a few seconds till the glue is almost dry, and then press it together firmly.

While waiting the eye part to dry, assemble the red part according to the number. Sew all pieces from the wrong side by following the guide line that you made earlier. Before we start sewing, I’m going to talk a little bit about sewing in general.

Hand Sewing

Of course you can always finish this project machine free. You only have to learn one technique of stitching and that is backstitch. Backstitch is pretty strong and looks the closest to machine sewing. It’s also pretty easy to do.

First, thread your needle and knot the end of the thread. Poke the needle up through the back or wrong side of the fabric. Take a small stitch to the left or right side of where the thread poking out. When the needle goes back through the wrong side, bring it up again through the fabric one stitch away (about 0.5 cm) from the last stitch. You will then push the needle again trough the fabric right on the end (the hole) of the first stitch and repeat the step as you go. You might find this pretty confusing. Just take a look at the video, it’ll help.

Sewing Machine

To be honest, this is my first full project using sewing machine so before I start, I took a practice on a scrap fabric and googled some sewing tutorial. The thing that you need to pay attention is to know how your machine works.

Some of sewing machines work differently especially on different fabric, for example I use a bigger needle and a special presser foot (walking presser foot) to sew vinyl, your machine might require different tool, so I recommend you to learn how your machine works first. Okay, now you’re ready to sew!

Just remember, the key to get a nice and neat stitches is to do it slowly (unless you’re a professional sewer then you do it your way hehe). After you done sewing the red parts, you will then fold and glue the excess fabric using rubber cement. Next, you also want to glue the eye to the red part using rubber cement as well.

Take your time, and sew it slowly to get a neat stitches.

It almost done, now all you have to do is fold 1 cm edges from the wrong side by following the guideline. Once the edges are folded, take 10 cm from both right and left side of the fabric and fold inside. Secure the fold using binder clips and sew about 0.5 cm from the edges and you’re done!

Even though the result isn’t as neat as I expected, but I like how it turned out. Okay that’s it for Today’s Attempt I hope you find this tutorial helpful and if you like, don’t forget to share this tutorial, check out my video, and subscribe so that you’ll be updated for my upcoming tutorials!
